What Kickboxing Training Actually Looks Like (And Why It Works)

March 10, 2026 | By East West Karate & Fitness

People search “kickboxing classes near me” for different reasons. Some want to get in shape. Some are bored with the gym and want something that feels like it matters. Some watched a YouTube video and thought it looked fun. Some are coming off a bad year and want to hit something.

All of those are legitimate reasons to start. And here’s what I’ll tell you: regardless of why you walked in, what you actually get out of it is usually better than what you expected.

What Kickboxing Training Actually Involves

Let’s be specific, because “kickboxing” means different things in different contexts.

At East West Karate & Fitness, kickboxing training is rooted in traditional striking arts. You’re learning punches - jab, cross, hook, uppercut - with proper mechanics, not just windmill swings. You’re learning kicks - front kick, roundhouse, side kick - with balance and hip rotation that generate real power. You’re learning combinations: how to link strikes together fluidly so that one technique sets up the next.

This isn’t cardio kickboxing where you’re shadowboxing in a mirror and nothing is ever checked. You work on pads and bags. You feel what it’s like to land a real combination with real resistance. That feedback is the difference between learning to move and learning to actually strike.

The Fitness Results Are Real

Here’s why kickboxing gets people in shape in ways that the gym doesn’t: it demands your full attention. When you’re drilling a five-strike combination on the pads, you can’t zone out. You can’t coast. Your brain is engaged along with your body.

The caloric burn in a real kickboxing class is significant - most people are working at high intensity for a sustained period, with short recovery between rounds. Cardiovascular conditioning improves fast. People who’ve been slogging through the same gym routine for years come in here and find muscles they forgot they had.

Beyond cardio, kickboxing develops functional strength and coordination. Hip drive in a roundhouse kick requires core engagement and hip flexibility. Punching with proper mechanics develops shoulder stability and rotational power. You’re not just getting fit in a general way - you’re developing athleticism.

You Don’t Need Experience to Start

This is the thing people get wrong about kickboxing. They assume there’s a baseline fitness level or skill level required before you walk in the door.

There isn’t. New students in Trevose, Warminster, Lansdale, and throughout Bucks and Montgomery County start from zero every week. Instructors break down each technique from the ground up. You’ll feel clumsy at first - that’s not a problem, that’s learning. Within a few weeks, the movements start to connect.

The only thing that slows people down is not showing up.

What a Typical Class Looks Like

You walk in, change into athletic clothes, and get on the mat. No uniform required to start.

Warmup is active from minute one - jogging, footwork drills, light shadowboxing to get your joints moving and your heart rate up. Then the instructor demonstrates the technique or combination for the day, breaks it down, and you start drilling it.

Most of class is either bag work or pad work with a partner. Bag work lets you develop power and get comfortable with combinations at your own pace. Pad work is more dynamic - your partner holds the pads and you’re hitting moving targets, which challenges your timing and accuracy.

Classes move. There’s no standing around. By the end of an hour, you’ve worked.

The Mental Side Nobody Talks About

There’s a reason people stick with this. It’s not just that it works physically - it’s that it changes how you feel.

Something about learning to move with power and intention shifts the way you carry yourself. People who train consistently tend to stand differently. They’re less anxious. They have a physical outlet for stress that’s more satisfying than a treadmill because it requires focus, not just endurance.

I’ve had students who started for fitness reasons and stayed because they realized they were also getting something else - composure, confidence, a sense of capability that carried over into the rest of their day.
